Community

Our team members live in the Fordham, Morris Heights, East Tremont and Belmont sections of the Bronx, and the Bath Beach, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst and Red Hook neighborhoods of Brooklyn. According to the New York City Department of City Planning, the Bronx has the highest concentration of NYC residents living under the federal poverty level, and it is the lowest income county in New York State. CitySquash’s Bronx partner middle school, M.S. 45, has roughly 1,000 students, only two sports teams, and offers students gym class only once a week. According to the New York City Public Schools data, 96% of the student body is eligible for free or reduced lunch. At CitySquash’s Bronx partner elementary school, P.S. 205, 89% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. At our Brooklyn partner school’s, I.S. 163, I.S. 136, and PAVE Academy, 94%, 93% and 89% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch, respectively. Our students range from third grade students (eight years old) to college seniors (twenty-two years old). The demographic makeup of our team members is roughly 75% Hispanic, 20% African American, and 5% other ethnicity.
