Twenty CitySquash students competed in the 2016 U.S. Middle School Team Squash Championships held at Yale University from January 22nd-24th.  The CitySquash teams had their most successful Middle School Teams ever, coming away as champions in one division. CitySquash’s Girl’s B team captured the Girls Division II title after beating five other teams to take home the title, including Eastern Greenwich Middle School in the finals. CitySquasher takes on Nick Matthew at the Tournament Of Champions

Jesse on court with Nick Matthew

During this year’s Tournament of Champions, CitySquash team member, Jesse Brew, got on court with three-time world champion, Nick Matthew. Jesse
wrote the following reflection on his unforgettable experience:

“On a wintery Tuesday afternoon, I had a chance to meet and play against the world’s best squash players. There it was: Grand Central’s hottest attraction, the Tournament of Champion’s glass court. Although I had never been there it felt really welcoming. I met lots of interesting players and people. One of the most interesting players who I met was Cameron Pilley. Cameron is number 13 in the world and from Yamba, Australia. I had never met anyone from Australia before. Cameron was good, but my next opponent was even better. My opponent was Nick Matthew – an England native, three-time world champion and current number three in the world.

I played a whole game with him, and even got a few tips! Nick taught me to fake a shot to throw off my opponent. Also, Nick Matthew is extremely fit so he can tire people out, which is another strategy I learned from him. He is definitely the hardest challenger I have met on court yet.

This opportunity was very special because it was my first time playing with a professional squash player. Thank you to the Tournament of Champions and CitySquash for giving me this amazing opportunity. It was something I have dreamed about and one that I will always remember! Thank you for everything, TOC and CitySquash, I really appreciate it!”

Brooklyn Team Members Recognized at 1st Annual Racquet Ceremony

On December 17th, 21 CitySquash Brooklyn team members from PS163 were recognized for earning their very own squash racquet and bag. The ceremony was a culmination of their hard work in the program since they joined last February. Since then, they have accrued over 100 hours on court. Parents, siblings, mentors, and Brooklyn board members were in attendance to celebrate the students’ accomplishment. Each student was individually recognized with a short commendation highlighting their contributions to the team on and off the court. 12 of the team members were excited to bring their racquets to Urban Team Nationals in Boston this past weekend, where many of them competed in their first squash tournament. Congratulations to the 21 Brooklyn team members who reached this exciting milestone!

CitySquash Welcomes Nineteen New Team Members

CitySquash's New Third Grade Class

On December 18th, CitySquash families, friends, mentors and staff gathered at MS 45 for the 11th Annual CitySquash Talent Show. The Talent Show is a highlight of the year for CitySquashers, not only because students get to show off their abilities outside the classroom and the court but also because we welcome a new group of team members to the organization. This year, six sixth graders and thirteen third graders joined the CitySquash team after three months of tryouts. A combined 151 students tried out for these spots at the third and sixth grade levels! In addition to celebrating the new CitySquashers, the talent show showcases our students’ artistic talents. Fourth graders through twelfth graders performed songs and choreographed dances, and were treated to a song and dance performance by the CitySquash staff. It was a great celebration of our students’ talents, and thank you to all who came out!
